In the UFC main event, Song Yadong outperforms Henry Cejudo on points.
The terrible outcome of Saturday's major bantamweight bout between Song Yadong and Henry Cejudo may force the UFC to schedule a rematch right away.
After the third round, the bout was stopped because Cejudo couldn't see after an inadvertent eye poke, and Yadong (22-8-1) won by technical decision. At Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena, the main event of UFC Fight Night featured a 135-pound fight that was set to last five rounds.
With scores of 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28, all three judges gave Yadong the victory in the shortened bout.
The bout lasted three complete rounds before being decided by a technical decision. Cejudo attempted to continue after the eye poke but eventually lost Round 3. When the eye poke occurred, the bout would have been canceled and declared a no contest if Cejudo had not been able to continue right away.
After the result, Yadong recommended a rematch right away.
"That eye poke was completely an accident," Yadong added. "This is not the outcome I was hoping for. I apologize so much. What a legend Henry is. We need to run it back. We shall battle once more.
Cejudo remarked, "I couldn't see out of my left eye," "The right is good. I was unaware of his tactics when he was pursuing me in the final minute [of the third round]. I wanted to keep on, but he was only going to hurt me if I couldn't see. Naturally, we are able to reverse it. Completely.
Late in the third round, Yadong put out a defensive hand as Cejudo attacked with punches, causing the eye poke. Yadong had taken a lot of the early lead, but Cejudo was winning with jabs and straight left hands, so the fight was really heating up at that point. Having failed to defeat Yadong, Cejudo, a former Olympic gold medallist in wrestling, had essentially committed to a stand-up match.
Cejudo punched Yadong in the second round, causing blood on his nose. In Round 3 exchanges, Cejudo was routinely outmatched by Yadong, who is 11 years younger than him. UFC Stats shows that Yadong's total strikes were 84-67 more than Cejudo's. Cejudo's official takedown record was 0-for-3.
Cejudo was the UFC's seventh-ranked bantamweight going into Saturday. No. 8 was Yadong's ranking.
