Three lessons from BYU's thrilling victory over Arizona, ranked 19th

It's the first time BYU basketball has won back-to-back road games in 37 years.

On Saturday night in Tucson, the Cougars defeated No. 19 Arizona with two free throws from Richie Saunders in the closing seconds of the game, scoring yet another memorable victory in a stunning 96-95 victory.

A slugfest was won by BYU. Arizona had scored 90 points in a game before Saturday, and it was 43-1 under Tommy Lloyd.

That record is now 43-2 after playing the Cougars once more.

With five different players scoring in double figures, BYU shot 55.4% from the field and 45.2% from three-point range.

When the score was closest, the Cougars played defense. Giving up 95 points is never good, but BYU's defense was really opportunistic.
The Cougars scored 22 points after Arizona committed 14 turnovers. By giving up only 12 points in transition, BYU also did a good job of containing the Wildcats' fast break attack.

In their first season under head coach Kevin Young, the Cougars are virtually guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Tournament as a ranked club.

Young's team has gone 8-2 since losing to Utah in overtime a little more than a month ago, and they have filled their March resume wonderfully.
BYU has solidified its reputation as a potent offensive team with multiple winning strategies. The Cougars have made significant defensive progress and are among the top rebounding teams in the country, even though it may not have been immediately apparent against Arizona.
